Unit 23- Monitor Positioning

As monitors are directional it is important that the floor wedges are not facing the audience and the performers. There problems with monitors facing the audience are: feedback into mics, gives the live sound engineer a harder job as it isn't part of the main mix and also it will hinder the sound quality and may dissatisfy the audience. Also it would affect the performers because they would be out of time with each other.

Good monitor position:

  • Allow the musicians to play cohesively
  • Tell the artist where they are within the song
  • Allows vocalists to stay in tune
  • Keep the drummer in time with the backing track or click track, if necessary.
