In todays session we had the task of assembling a PA system and sound checking it so that is was ready for performance.
Before starting everyone was assigned individuals roles to speed up the process. The role i was assigned was connecting the effects units and feedback destroyer to the snake box. With everyone doing their own roles the PA was put up quickly and efficiently.
Requirements of a good PA Set Up:
- Safe environment (cables uncoiled)
- Correct number of speakers and monitors
- Working Equipment
- Right amount of equipment (mics, stands etc)
- Amps (if needed)
- Great quality sound
- Critical distance worked out
The set up went relatively smoothly, no major problems occurred during set up. All cables were uncoiled and cover as to not trip anyone up. One of the cables attached to the main vocals mic was faulty but through sound checking we were able to identify the issue and fix it immediately. Another problem that we had was forgetting to connect the main mix into the mixer but again with the sound check we identified the problem and was able to rectify it swiftly. Also there was a bit of confusion when monitors were changed and people forgot what aux sends needed to be sent to but despite these hiccups we managed to finish the set up successfully within the time limit given.
In order to have a more successful set up next time, we will keep a checklist aw we set up to know what has been down and what hasn't. It might take longer to set up this way however it will be quicker in the long run. Writing down the aux will save everyone time if you forget and prevents confusion. We had a feedback destroyer at our disposal also but was unable to use due to a fault within the system. Next time we should try to fix it before so we are able to utilise it because they are very quick when trying to deal with feedback. It finds it automatically and compresses it so you don't have to do it manually making the set up process much quicker.
All in all it was very successful session.
