Loudness Wars
Compression
Compression is often used to make music sound louder without increasing its peak amplitude. By compressing the peak signals it becomes possible to increase the overall gain of a signal without exceeding the dynamic limits of a reproduction device or medium. It is also used give vocals and instruments a more even sound
New York Compression
New York Compression or Parallel Compression is used to make the quieter parts of a track to stick out in the mix more. This can be done by putting a compressor on a separate bus and turning it up accordingly. I would use it on vocals and instruments to bring out sound you might got lost in the mix.
Dynamic Range
Dynamic range is the range of acceptable or possible volumes of sound occurring in the course of a piece of music or a performance.

- It's the ratio of the softest to loudest sound that can be reliably transmitted or reproduced by a particular sound system, measured in decibels.

Harmonic Partials
Harmonic partials, are partials whose frequencies are numerical integer multiples of the fundamental (including the fundamental, which is 1 times itself). These overlapping terms are variously used when discussing the acoustic behaviour of musical instruments.
